Hundreds turn out for 2008 Eureka Peace March
The now annual peace march may have dwindled in size from the thousands that turned out in the first years but still attracts hundreds of what some organizers call "the hard core activists". Pass mouse over here for image or click for larger image. Photo thanks to Carl Muecke

CaliforniaEnvironment & Forest DefenseGovernment & ElectionsNorth Coast Ocean Protection Coalition Opposes Corrupted MLPA Process posted by Dan Bacher 2009-06-24T17:41:59Z This great article by Judith Vidaver of the Ocean Protection Coalition, published in the coalition's June newsletter, strongly opposes Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's corrupt fast-track Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Process. There is nothing "green" about this process that aims to kick sustainable seaweed harvesters, fishermen and abalone divers off Point Arena to pave the way for offshore oil rigs, wave energy projects and corporate aquaculture.
Photo: If Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Resources Secretary Mike Chrisman have their way, sustainable harvesting of sea palms like these will be prohibited in Sea Lion Cove off Point Arena. CaliforniaEnvironment & Forest DefenseGovernment & ElectionsLabor & WorkersNorth Coast Sea-Combers: Seaweed Harvesters Threatened by MLPA Process posted by Dan Bacher 2009-06-09T21:05:47Z Elly Hopper has written an excellent article for "Terrain: Northern California's Environmental Magazine," published by the Ecology Center in Berkeley, on the threat that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's fast track Marine Life Protected Process (MLPA) poses to sustainable seaweed harvesting on the Mendocino County coast.
"Kaitilin Gaffney, Central Coast program manager for the Ocean Conservancy, has been following the process for five years and believes it is one of the most important pieces of environmental legislation in California," according to Hopper. "She feels that the process has been more than fair: 'I would say the MLPA is clearly the most participatory and inclusive process that I've ever participated in.'
Yet some local stakeholders who use the ocean as a subsistence food source and were not selected for a decision- making position feel steamrolled. Jim Martin, the West Coast Regional Director of the Recreational Fishing Alliance, who has been involved with various MLPA plans for ten years, feels that the process wasn't as inclusive as it's been made out to be: 'That is complete BS. It's open in the sense that there are a lot of meetings to go to and a lot of things to read and speakers to listen to. But when it comes to public comment, you get one minute.'"(continued)
Communities For Peace
This years, now annual, anti-(Iraq)-War demonstration took on a new persona in the form of a demonstrative memorial for the victims of the war in Iraq which include well over the 650,000 dead Iraqis documented over a year ago as of this writing and the over 3,000 dead American service men and women. While it is unlikely that the number of participants in this year's more somber and choreographed demonstration reached the 4,000 mark as in past years there were many people present along 5th street;
and many more on 4th;
The full breadth of the demonstartion is difficult to depict in a couple of photos being spread up and down Highway 101 as it was but there are more larger photos here.
There is also a video clip here. It is too large for easy download via dial-up modem at 141 megabytes. There is also an even lower resolution version uploaded to Google Video though that will likely be a bit much for a 56K modem also. A reduced size version is here though at 27 megabytes it is still a hefty download for dialup...
This might even work on dialup;

Demonstrators met with government orchestrated "counter demonstration" at Eureka City Hall as pay raises and expensive attornies for killer cops top agenda.
Demonstrators serving food stood outside the door of City Hall to protest the 22% pay raise given to EPD officers and $75,000 granted for the defense of ex Chief Douglas in a previous, unilateral, secret session.
In totalitarian countries, we are told, governments organize pro government rallies to create the illusion of support. Castro, Mao, Stalin and the rest of them. This is a glimpse of the strange scene outside City Hall on January 15th, 2008 where I saw such a spectacle on a small scale. Complete with an electric road information sign, template made posters and gloating pro-police infallibility "demonstrators", some of who appeared to be drunk, some of whom appeared to be doing some form of pennance.

Reclaim your community!
Terry Liles, the officer who shot 16 year-old Chris Burgess, is
back on the beat before his victim's body has left the morgue.
Time for sufficient treatment and rehab for the shooter has not
passed and the community is not safe with this man toting a gun
again.
In addition, violations of police procedures, such as pursuing a
suspect without backup, the documented previous beating by Liles of the victim, and questions of why non-lethal force was
not used should be further pursued.
Policies that allow excessive police violence to continue
without accountability or structural changes to prevent such
violence must be challenged. In some countries the police don't
even carry guns.
If you support creating a safe community, please call the
Humboldt D.A. Paul Gallegos to encourage further
investigation into this killing and the murder of Cheri
Moore (ALSO INVOLVING LILES) mere months ago. (707)445-7411
